Emily Hardman joined the Becket Fund as Communications Director in October of 2011, merging her legal and communication experience to found the new department. Emily graduated summa cum laude from Brigham Young University, obtained her law degree from the J. Reuben Clark Law School where she was active in moot court and the Journal of Public Law, and received a research fellowship at Oxford University. She is barred in the State of Utah.

For two-and-a-half years Emily was the Special Assistant to Edwin Meese III, the 75th US Attorney General, in the Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at the Heritage Foundation, where she was active in constitutional policy. For her commitment work in non-profit law, Emily received the Shawn Bentley Public Service Award from Senator Orin Hatch.

Emily has worked in numerous legal and communication capacities including: the Utah Supreme Court, the Queen’s High Court in London, a District Attorney’s office, an international firm in London, and clerked for the Senate Judiciary Committee. While on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Emily assisted in Justice Kagan’s nomination hearing. Emily is a state-certified mediator and has been actively involved in international health and communication projects as Vice-Chair of the International Aids Prevention and Research Organization.

Since joining Becket, Emily has appeared on MSNBC, featured in the National Law Journal, and quoted in numerous print outlets including the Associate Press, CNN.com, the Washington Examiner, and Huffington Post.

Emily is an adjunct professor, amateur photographer, artist, cyclist, and ballroom dancer. She recently survived a black widow spider bite. Emily grew up in a small farm town, with her five siblings and 13 additional foster siblings.
