Angela Wu delivers main address at Congressional meetingJul 30, 2009 To emphasize United States Congress’ commitment to securing religious freedom for all people everywhere, Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) and Emanuel Cleaver, II (MO-05) hosted a private luncheon with over a dozen foreign ambassadors.
In the spirit of promoting religious freedom, Rep. Cleaver and Rep. Franks invited Angela C. Wu, International Law Director for The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, to deliver the main address at the luncheon. Among the countries represented in the meeting were Indonesia, Morocco, Nigeria, Bahrain, Sudan and Uzbekistan.
“There are no absolute freedoms,” Ms. Wu told the gathering. “They are all balanced against one another, and against the interests of, for example, public order or security and other things that are already recognized in international instruments. What’s truly interesting about religious freedom, though, is that it’s a right that encompasses so many others – the right to speech and expression, the right to freedom of association, even property rights...."
