Becket Institute Director Produces Documentary on Religious Freedom in TurkeyDec 5, 2006 Raphaela Schmid, Director of the Becket Institute, the Becket Fund's academic partner in Europe, has co-authored and produced a documentary on religious freedom in Turkey.
"Turkey at the Gates of Europe" was filmed in Istanbul, the city on two continents, which has been
both a center of Christiandom and a symbol of Muslim power threatening
Christian Europe. Today, Turkey is a NATO member, the only one with a
99.8% Muslim population, and is asking to join the European
Union. Modern Turkey is struggling to reconcile its religious identity with the state secularism introduced by its founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
The documentary was broadcast on various European TV channels, just before the Pope’s visit,
a few months after his controversial speech at Regensburg. It features interviews with the Grand Mufti, the Chief Rabbi, the Armenian
Patriarch, the Syrian Orthodox Metropolitan, a Roman Catholic Bishop,
and other religious and civil authorities.
