Becket Fund Responds to CAIR

Mar 29, 2007

On March 23, 2007, the Becket Fund sent a letter to Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, expressing our oppositions to suing private citizens in Shqeirat, et al. v. US Airways Group, Inc., et al., which has become known as "The Case of the Flying Imams."  In that letter we offered to represent any John Does sued in the case free of charge.

On March 27, 2007, we received a response from CAIR, attempting to explain and justify the targeting of individual citizens in this piece of civil rights litigation.

We are not convinced.

"...our opposition to using religious liberty as an argument for suing individual citizens who report their security suspicions is not diminished. We continue to believe this is a dangerous inflation of the whole idea of religious liberty. It debases the currency of that concept. And we will continue to vigorously oppose it."
