Becket Fund Condemns UN Human Rights Council Religious Defamation Resolution

Mar 30, 2007

The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty condemns the resolution passed today by the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva endorsing laws to combat the "defamation of religions." The resolution, presented by Pakistan for the Organization of Islamic Conference countries, purports to promote religious tolerance, but will only harm the freedom of religious minorities throughout the world.

"For the first time, the Human Rights Council has acted to protect an ideology, not the person holding the belief or idea," said Angela Wu, International Director at the Becket Fund. "This lays a foundation for thought-policing, not religious tolerance, and is antithetical to the very notion of human rights."

"It is the right of every human being to seek out and discover the truth for themselves," said Wu. "Laws like these do not support that right. They narrow, restrict, and in some instances, eliminate it."
