Americans United Wrong on the Facts, Wrong on the Law, Says Becket Fund

Aug 9, 2007

Americans United for Separation of Church and State unjustly targeted the first Hebrew-language charter school in the nation, the Ben Gamla Charter School of Hollywood, Florida, by publicly accusing it of violating the Establishment Clause of the Constitution. The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, a public-interest law firm that represents Ben Gamla, responded to the charges with an open letter of its own that points out the many inaccuracies in AU’s letter of accusation.

The Becket Fund letter points out that AU’s attack is based solely on the potential use of a Hebrew language textbook that Ben Gamla itself rejected well before AU sent its unsolicited opinion to the school.

“This appears to be nothing more than a fund-raising ploy on the part of Americans United,” said Eric Rassbach, Senior Legal Counsel at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty. “They didn’t even bother to check their facts before unjustly accusing Ben Gamla of violating the Constitution. Let’s hope that next time they do their homework before condemning innovative school programs like Ben Gamla.”
