In an interview with NPR's Jamie Tarabay, Angela Wu, International Law Director of the Becket Fund, explained why "defamation of religion" laws do not work.
“If you just think about what all the world’s religions say, each one of them claims to have some sort of the truth. And each one of them is probably offensive by its very nature to people of other faiths who disagree with them,” said Ms. Wu.
In her report, Ms. Tarabay included statements from Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, Ambassador-at-large for International Religious Freedom John Hanford, and Ugandan Representative to the Third Committee Maragaret Awino-Kafeero.
The Becket Fund has been working extensively on this issue at the United Nations for years with the hope of reversing this dangerous trend that inhibits the free expression of peaceful religious speech.
