Creatore v. Town of Trumbull

The Becket Fund filed suit in federal court to protect the Knights of Columbus’ right to display a crèche on the town hall green of Trumbull, Connecticut. The green had previously been the site of displays and events such as an annual art fair, an international food festival, a Veteran's Day wreath and a Christmas Tree. This case gave The Becket Fund the opportunity to challenge the case law in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, which had ruled against such displays in the past. Although the Second Circuit ruled against the Knights of Columbus, the Supreme Court vacated the Appeals Court's decision, 115 S. Ct. 2637 (1995), the same day it decided Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board v. Pinette, 115 S. Ct. 2440 (1995). The Second Circuit issued an opinion remanding the case to the District Court. 60 F.3d 59.  The parties entered a consent decree that will permit the Knights of Columbus to display their creche.
