Matter of Congregation Kol Shafar (2006)

Congregation Kol Shafar is a Conservative Jewish congregation in Tiburon, California, just north of San Francisco. In 2006, the Tiburon Planning Commission denied the congregation’s plan to make much-needed improvements to its existing synagogue, despite the Congregation’s willingness to accept reasonable conditions. That’s when the congregation turned to the Becket Fund. Becket Fund attorneys wrote a series of legal opinion letters to Tiburon’s officials, warning that the denial violated federal law. As a result, Tiburon compromised and allowed Kol Shafar to expand its synagogue.
